Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For have you covered. We asked every company on our list for their funnest, most unique, and weirdest jobs. Here, we bring you the most bizarre of the bunch. Not only do some of these Best Companies employees get perks like unlimited vacation packages and college tuition reimbursements, a couple even get to put “loremaster” on their business cards. 1. Loremaster Company: Activision Blizzard (No. 66) Description: This title is proof that playing an excessive amount of video games can land you a full-time job. Activision Blizzard employs two historians responsible for the lore across all of Activision Blizzard’s franchises. Referred to as “loremasters” or “walking encyclopedias,” these people are brought in to assist whenever questions surrounding a game’s history arise. They have been known to put together guide books, family trees and character cheat sheets for characters across all Blizzard franchises including World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Hearthstone, StarCraft, Diablo, and Heroes of the Storm. 2. Sensory Technologist Company: Mars (No. 50) Description: Sensory technologists have one of the sweetest gigs at Mars. They lead tasting panels and work closely with food scientists to make sure that Mars brands, including M&Ms and Snickers, create products that are up to par. Lisa Schroeder, a sensory technologist at Mars Chocolate North America, sorts through ingredient samples from all over the world and evaluates about 60 to 90 samples every week on their taste, texture, and aromatics. 3. Certified Cheese Professional Company: Whole Foods Market (No. 58) Description: This is a title that must be earned. The “certified cheese professional” distinction is reserved for an elite group of individuals who have managed to pass a three-hour cheese exam. The exam tests cheesemongers on storage and handling, nutrition, distribution, raw materials, the ripening process, and types of cheeses. Whole Foods Market currently has 318 certified cheese professionals, more than any other employer in the United States. 4. Innovative and Advanced Tech Team Member Company: Intuit Description: Whether it’s virtual reality goggles or a voice-controlled device, this team gets to play with the coolest new gadgets before they’re available to the public. The team is on the forefront of leading-edge tech, like blockchain and artificial intelligence, in order to help small businesses use these tools. And this is considered work. 5. Color Designer Company: REI (No. 28) Description: Color designers at REI need to understand the “art and science of color.” This means they are responsible for developing color strategy, palettes and storytelling for the co-op’s private brands. Not a bad gig for someone who is passionate about design, patterns, and the outdoors. 6. Trailhead Writer Company: Salesforce (No. 8) Description: Salesforce has an entire team dedicated to mastering the elusive art of conversation. Trailhead, a series of presentations that helps people learn to use Salesforce, guides users through learning trails (or modules) that break up content into small, digestible bites. The “Trailhead writers” are responsible for writing in a conversational and fun tone. “We think people learn best when the content isn’t full of jargon, but sounds like it was written by an actual human,” says Chris Duarte, the editor-in-chief of Trailhead. |
