Smart Fortwo Electric Drive Struggling Smart is hoping to get a charge from a battery-powered model that is designed for 87 miles per charge. Acceleration, though, remains dangerously slow: zero to 60 miles per hour in 13 seconds with a leisurely top speed of 75 mph. The Fortwo ED goes on the market in September at the bargain-basement price of $22,000. If owner Daimler can turn Smart around, the Fortwo Electric Drive may turn out to have been its saving grace. |
