Mohamed Kante Age 29 Occupation Test Engineer Company EMC Location Hopkinton, Mass. Starting this month, 30 fourth- and fifth-graders in Bamako, Mali, will get to be total nerds—that is, campers at iNERDE, the summer program Mohamed Kante founded to bring STEM education opportunities to his native country. Kante immigrated to the U.S. in the summer of 2003 and earned a degree in electrical engineering from Northeastern University. It was at Northeastern where Kante and a few classmates developed an eye-controlled robotic feeding arm for people with disabilities. Similarly, he wants kids back home to learn how they can use science and tech to solve problems in their community. Throughout Africa, says Kante, “technology is our future.” |
