Shares of OfficeMax got a boost in November, after wood products manufacturer Boise Cascade announced plans to raise $200 million through an initial public offering. OfficeMax owns a 20% equity stake in Boise Cascade plus additional shares that altogether could be worth $310 million once Boise goes public, according to Morningstar. That would be a nice chunk of change for OfficeMax, which has a market capitalization of roughly $850 million. But it's probably not enough to make up for a lack of competitiveness in a market dominated by Staples (SPLS, Fortune 500) and mass merchandise retailers like Wal-Mart(WMT, Fortune 500)and Amazon (AMZN, Fortune 500). For the year, analysts expect OfficeMax to report a 2% drop in revenue, although earnings are forecast to rise 24% versus last year. |
