Advice for combating jet lag? I get on the new time zone immediately once the plane takes off; change my watch, drink lots of water and always do a stretch routine. I take a hot bath before bed. I set two alarms so I don't toss and turn worrying about if I will get up on time. When possible I take a 20-minute power nap on plane rides or right before dinner after working the day. I also do power walks in the airports waiting for flights or layovers. It keeps the circulation going! Beauty products you never travel without? La Mer skin care; Pantene Age Defying hair products; my favorite perfume -- DIVA; and my trusty make up case with foundation, blush, eye shadow/liner and two lipsticks. Finally La Mer lip balm is the best. What are you tips for keeping relationships with kids/spouses/partners healthy when you're always on the road? I speak to my husband every night -- no matter where I am. I try to catch him right before he has dinner and usually it's right after I have had dinner; we typically are on 3-hour different time zones -- he is west and I am east. Even when I travel west we stick to this routine or I catch him right before bed. I always spoke to my two boys every night when I traveled all through my career. I found when they were teens they would talk more to me on the phone each night I was away than when I would come home! What's your favorite airport to kill time in? I loved the United Airlines Denver terminal because for 15 years they had a great women's clothing store where I could do a lot of damage in a half hour! It closed last year so I am still in mourning. I spend most of my time at JFK or SFO -- both have continued to upgrade their services but United JFK has a great first-class lounge so I hang out there for the majority of my time in the airport. Jessica Herrin Title: Founder and CEO Company: Stella and Dot On the road: 6-7 weeks a year What's your go-to travel suitcase (or bag)? I'm a minimalist that likes to avoid checking at all costs. So I need two bags that carry it all -- The Stella & Dot Switch Bag is my perfect carry on tote and the basic black Samsonite roller bag that calls attention to the 'many bags look alike' warnings. I've often grabbed the wrong one when a gate check bag comes up. Two apps you can't travel without? Evernote, to capture any inspired thought that comes from a customer or from the world around me, and Facebook. How do you stay comfortable during long train/plane rides? Flying is a great uninterrupted way for me to focus on work, so my comfort comes from being sure my devices are charged and chargeable and I've got great music to listen to. Other than that, a wrap to keep me warm and a paperback or paper so I'm not idle during those tortuous 15 minutes of no electronics. Advice for combating jet lag? Honestly? Coffee and Ambien. Plus, I try to mentally only acknowledge the time zone I am in and get outside to take in the sun if my body still thinks its the middle of the night. Beauty products you never travel without? Bobbi Brown BB cream -- I love all in one. Lancome Definicils Mascara and Nars or Buxom lip gloss. What are your tips for keeping relationships with kids/spouses/partners healthy when you're always on the road? Skype and FaceTime are magic! We read bedtime stories together. My husband will even put me on Skype in the girls room and I gently nudge them along to get ready for school while he's in the shower. I'm in my hotel room working and simply shout out thinks like "hey - you can't wear those shoes" and "ok, go brush your teeth!" I also power pack my trips and get home to them as soon as I can. What's your favorite airport to kill time in? Even though it's my home base, I love Terminal 2 at SFO. Any extra time, and there are plenty of power outlets, great food, and a place to get a mani-pedi or massage. They even have a yoga room. I've never been it, of course, but it still makes me laugh walking by. So California, the home state I love. |
