Vice Chairman Tom Mendoza personally phones employees to thank them for their contributions. The program is called “Catch Someone Doing Something Right,” and Mendoza makes about 30 to 40 calls each week. As he says, “If you allocate 10 percent of your time to making sure the employees that work for you know how much you personally care, I think you’ll have a better culture.” Employees consider a call from Mendoza one of the highlights of their work experience. The company has other creative ways of honoring outstanding accomplishments, too, including tacking notes of appreciation on a Wall of Awesomeness in some offices and regionally presenting “Living Our Values” awards to employees. Says one employee, “Almost everyone across the company is willing and wants to help. This applies even when reaching out to other business units. Management candor, especially at the highest levels, is unprecedented in my many years in the industry.” |
